SEA OF YOUTH
“Sea of Youth” takes place between June and September. Every five days a group of eight young people circumnavigate Mallorca and Menorca experiencing the advantages of Sail Training, among which are building self esteem and self confidence, learning to work as a team, creating a feeling of success and learning about the value of cooperation. In addition they carry out other tasks such as cleaning beaches and the seabed and identifying different fish species to support scientific investigation. These tasks encourage environmental awareness and highlight the importance of the conservation of the Balearic Islands. In total more than 200 young people take part every year.
THE SALT ROUTE
The Salt Route is a sailing regatta that takes place every year during Easter week and follows the old salt route between Barcelona and Ibiza. This 350 mile crossing presents a challenge for the young crew aboard our sail training ship Galaxie.
We start our training programme for the crew between January and March. The Balearic Department of Social Services proposes young candidates who usually come to us from institutions or care homes, as well as being at risk of social exclusion.
Every weekend a group of 8 young people start sailing and discover the benefits it brings. A total of around 100 young people take part in this selection process.
After evaluating which participants have developed their social and teamwork skills to enable them to compete, the Capitain of Galaxie and Social Services then select the race crew.
